Marketing: Book Review : Purple Cow

Purple Cow by Seth Godin “Transform You Business By Being Remarkable”

The book is centered round the opinion that ‘old school’ marketing is dead. The years of advertising on Television, Radio and Print no longer guarantees success. So why do huge multi-national companies continue to spend big money on run-of-the-mill advertising? Seth suggests; this is because the corporate giants resist change and fear the failure of trying something new. Employees are groomed to conform to the norm and keep thinking inside the box because its a safer bet. Why change something that has worked well for the company in the past? Because times have changed!

Seth gives evidence of these changes and suggests that people have become oblivious to commercials, billboards, banner-ads etc. In a world where people have everything, and need nothing it becomes increasingly difficult to create a unique product or service. However, it is only the remarkable and innovative products that are truly successful. These remarkable, innovative products/services are known as a “Purple Cow”.

Advertising now relies on ‘word of mouth’ and the people that intially fall in love with your product will tell friends, family and colleagues. And that this recommendation is usually well received. Evidence becomes apparent when you look at the rise of innovative companies like Google, Facebook or Starbucks who didnt spend millions on TV advertising. But these companies were so remarkable, innovative and exciting that people spread the word!

The book talks in depth about all these subjects mentioned and gives a true insight into what a “Purple Cow” is, creating successful companies the world over. Seth shows us many examples of “Purple Cow” products and companies and this helps to confirm his ideas. The book is a real eye opener whether your a marketing newbie or an industry expert and I would definately recommend it!

Seth Godin is a marketing expert from the USA. He is a public speeker reagrding all thing marketing andhas wrote many sucessful and innovative books. You can find him at www.sethgodin.com and remember “Safe is Risky”.

Teach An Old Site New Tricks

Well, ive been given the opportunity to reoptimise a Document Management website that I intially coded 2 years ago. I thought I would share this experience and see how the newer SEO techniques would effect the SERPs and site traffic. Before commenting on the proposed changes I will give you a brief history regarding the site.

Micrographics Header

Site History

In the beginning of 2006 I was approached by Micrographics to redesign there website and help generate site traffic. After working on the site part-time, the redesign was launched in the second half of 2006. With the addition of over 40 pages, a new design, and the ability to expand it gave the company a valid “footprint” on the web.

SERP’s

The researched keywords were generated geo-targeting the local towns and cities. Up-to-date SEO techniques were used and the site was submitted to forums, directories and link exchanges where possible. Within 3 months the site had climbed up the rankings and was in the top 10 for all geo-targeted phrases i.e. ‘Document Management Leeds’. The optimisation increased the site traffic from 180 unique visitors per year to 180 per month — view site stats. PPC was set up using Adwords, targeting the main keywords for the site. With no SEO maintainance contract the site has remined untouched for more than a year. Until now….

The Plan

Alot has changed over the past 2 years, adopting newer techniques I will show you the direct effect on the live Micrographics site. Here are the proposed changes:

  • Longtail Keyword Targeting
  • Unique Headers and Page Titles (no keyword spamming)
  • Removal of Links Page
  • Add a FAQ’s Section (demonstrate understanding)
  • Use of No-Follow on Internal Link Structure To Control link juice
  • Add Larger page footer indicating benefits.
  • PPC changes
  • Change content to demonstrate benefits > features.

Once a change has been implemented I will demonstrate how it was acheived and the reasons behind it. Eventually, providing you with statistics that prove how well the techniques are working and any valid changes that were made.
